Mountain Biking and Scooters for Kids in Zermatt
Zermatt is a brilliant place for kids to get out on two (or one) wheels. From gentle family bike paths to the famous mountain carts and dirt scooters, there is plenty of rolling adventure to be had, all with the Matterhorn watching over you. Here is what families need to know.
Mountain carts and dirt scooters
One of the most fun things to do in Zermatt is to ride a mountain cart or dirt scooter down the trails between Blauherd and Sunnegga. Take the lift up, then roll back down at your own pace. These are generally suitable from around age nine, depending on the activity, and are a guaranteed highlight, so expect plenty of giggles.
Family mountain biking
Zermatt has a network of marked bike trails graded from easy to advanced. Confident young riders will love the family-friendly routes, while teens can step up to longer descents. Bikes and helmets can be hired in the village, and a guided session is a great way to find the right trails.
Staying safe on the trails
Always wear a helmet, as it is non-negotiable on the trails.
Check the bike or scooter fits your child before setting off.
Gloves and closed shoes help, and knee pads are a good idea for beginners.
Start on the easier, well-signed routes and build up.
Pair it with a lift day
Riding down pairs perfectly with a scenic lift up and a lake or playground stop. For the bigger picture, see our guide to things to do in Zermatt with kids.
Biking and scooting are favourites for our Explorers (9-11) and Rovers (12-14), always with helmets, the right kit and experienced leaders. To make it part of a supervised week, take a look at our Zermatt day camps.
