Rainy-Day Activities in Zermatt with Kids

Even in summer, mountain weather can turn quickly, so it pays to have a rainy-day plan up your sleeve. The good news is that Zermatt has plenty to keep children happy when the clouds roll in. Here are our favourite wet-weather activities for families.

The Matterhorn Museum (Zermatlantis)

This atmospheric underground museum recreates an old Zermatt village and tells the dramatic story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. It is hands-on, engaging and a great way to spend a rainy hour or two with curious kids.

Chocolate and pizza making

Few things lift a grey day like making, and eating, your own Swiss chocolate. Pizza-making sessions are another big hit, and both are popular fixtures on our camp programme.

Pottery and crafts

Alpine pottery painting and craft workshops let children get creative and take home a souvenir of their trip. Quiet, cosy and perfect for all ages.

Indoor sports and swimming

When energy levels are high, indoor sports halls and pools are a great way to let off steam. A swim is always a winner with children, rain or shine.

Tips for a rainy day in Zermatt

  • Pack a waterproof and a warm layer, as it can be chilly when it rains at altitude.

  • Many activities are weather-proof, so a wet morning need not write off the day.

  • Build in a treat: hot chocolate in a cafe is a Zermatt institution.

Our camps run rain or shine

One less thing to worry about: our camp days go ahead whatever the weather. When it rains, our leaders simply switch to indoor and all-weather activities like chocolate making, pottery and escape rooms, so there is always plenty of fun (you can read more in our FAQs).
